Selebrating Dr. Seuss Birthday at the American Library. Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, spent his lifetime dreaming about many different creatures and silly ways to name them. At first, his main goal was to make people laugh and then he turned his talents toward teaching preschoolers to read. Born on March 2, 1904, in Springfield, Massachusetts, Theodor Geisel published his first children's book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, under the name of Dr. Seuss in 1937. Next came a huge string of best-selling successes, from Yertle the Turtle to Green Eggs and Ham, all filled with nonsense words and outlandish characters and worlds, loved by generations. Ukrainian kids also enjoed the book by Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat that whas written to help primary school children to learn to read.
