Youth Diplomatic Initiatives gathered in American Library yesterday to have a meeting with Tim Standaert (US Embassy), who held a class on diplomatic relations, politics and future prospects of cooperation with counties of Middle East. This time students learned about Afghanistan and shared their views on building intercultural integrity.

Literary Birthdays – October 27: Francis Fukuyama

Born 27 October 1952, Francis Fukuyama is an American philosopher, political economist, and author. His thesis in "THE END OF HISTORY AND THE LAST MAN" is simple. The failure of communism and the disappearance of the Soviet Union have resulted in the victory of liberal democracy and capitalism. There are, he claims, no more challengers. Security and freedom have been achieved, and consequently history has ended.

Book of the Week - "Tolstoy and the Purple Chair" by Nina Sankovitch

Nina Sankovith was born in Evanston, Illinois, to immigrant parents. When Nina's eldest sister died, she turned to books for comfort, escape and introspection. Kid's Club on October, the 23rd

Today we continued on our Kid's Club meetings. Children from local Kyiv schools discovered American Library, watched movies in English, and improved their vocabulary with new words. This Autumn we'll keep holding such occasions each Thursday at 1.30 p.m.

On Tuesday, October the 14th American Library held training for students in department of Arts and Humanities. Students learned about online Library services, new technologies and digital information. Using Electronic Catalogue and online databases students are able to complete their research with up-to-date information.

This Autumn we prepared new Board Games for our readers! Among them: "7 Wonders", "Cards Against Humanity", "Can you name 5?", "Say Anything". These games will help you find out what your friends think on debated questions, while improving your English speaking skills.


Training on Library Automation

Today American Library held training for students of Library Programs. Future librarians learned about Library Automation, integrated Library Systems, Library 2.0 Services and Products. In today's age of Web 2.0 and social networking, Libraries are entering the new era. Students found out about new library automation researches they'll need to keep their institutions up-to-date in today's technological environment.

Book Of the Week - "Design Basics"

This week we decided to pick a collection of graphic design work selected by designers for designers. This resource concentrates on three key elements of design: 1) Layout - what makes a design's look compelling, whether it's found in a magazine, book, or simple restaurant menu. 2) Type - see how to stretch, alter, and successfully use type for any assigment. 3) Color - graphic design relies on color to get the message across. 


Training on Science Metrics

On Wednesday, October the 8th, American Library and Electronic Resources Center of NaUKMA held training about "Science Metrics". Students, teachers and researchers learned about specifics and actual questions of research process, about finding networks of scientists with related researches, about financing the research, etc.

On Wednesday, October the 8th, American Library held training about Library usage for researchers. Students from Law programs discovered Electronic catalogs and Electronic databases with up-to-date scientific materials: dissertations, monographs, journals and magazines.

Book Choice - African-American Achievement

This week we decided to display the stories of men and women who have helped shape the course of modern history. These stories are told by Martin Luther King's wife, Coretta Scott King. Book series "Black Americans of achievement" is written in straightforward, colorful style for young audience. The series is richly illustrated with photographs, art, and documents. Each volume contains a bibliography and complete chronology of person's life.

In spite of cold weather, American Library continues educational process. On Monday, October 6, we held a lecture "Computerized informational technologies in modern Libraries". Students learned about digital Libraries, which in future will be among the most important institutions of society, giving control to constantly increasing body of information.

On Friday, October 3, American Library held training about scientific electronic archives. This training was arranged as a part of the course "Basic concepts of Bologna Process in NaUKMA" for students, teachers, researchers. 


Book Choice - World Vegetarian Day

World Vegetarian Day encourages us all to eat our vegetables and fruits. A vegetarian, by definition, eats no meat. That includes fish and other forms of seafood. Bottom line is, a vegetarian eats no animal. Their diet consists of plants....fruits and vegetables. They are ethically and morally opposed to killing animals for food. They are also against poor treatment of animals at farms ad slaughterhouses. This day we've chosen books on nutrition, dieting, eco and green movements, and cookbooks offering vegetarian recipes.

Bologna Process in NaUKMA - Training on October, 1st

American Library on October, 1st held another training of the course "Basic concepts of Bologna Process in NaUKMA" for students, teachers, and researchers. This time students learned about Access to scientific information in ElibraryUSA database and Research4Life programs.


Book Choice - Library Day

Ukrainian Libraries Day is celebrated annually on September 30. On this day we decided to pick books for those who run a library, work there, or simply want to know more about the world of libraries. Also we found exciting readings on the history of libraries - from the beginnings of writing to the sharing of scholar works over the Internet.

American Library on September 30 continued performing lectures and presentations of the course "Basic concepts of Bologna Process in NaUKMA" for students, teachers, and researchers. This time students learned about electronic catalogue usage, how to search a book in the library, while staying home, and about up-to-date specialized journals and magazines, all available in electronic databases.
