LECTURE ON UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS IN THE U.S.

We are happy to invite you to attend a lecture by Wesley D. Roy, Director of International Relations, Johnson & Wales University who will provide insights on undergraduate programs in the USA.

The presentation will provide a general overview of undergraduate programs in the U.S., and will highlight specific opportunities at Johnson & Wales University.

Prospective students will receive advice on how to build a strong application.

The event will be held on November 4 at 17.30 at Viktor Kytasty American Library, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, 8/5, Voloska str., Kyiv.

Youth Council meeting in American Library

On Monday, October 28, U.S. Ambassador in Ukraine Geoffrey R. Pyatt hold a meeting in American Library Kyiv. Ambassador Geoffrey R. Pyatt met Youth Council members, who are students from a variety of Ukrainian universities. Members of the meeting discussed current Ukrainian youth initiatives and education aspects.

ALCTS Webinar: MOOCs: Copyright Management for Online Courses?

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11am Pacific, noon Mountain, 1pm Central, and 2pm Eastern time.


Description:  Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are sweeping the country and libraries and librarians are watching this development carefully. This series of four webinars will help librarians gain an understanding of the complexity of the MOOC “movement,” learn how to support students and faculty engaged with MOOCs, become familiar with the copyright and intellectual property requirements in relation to MOOCs, and hear what the future may hold for MOOCs.

The third webinar, “MOOCs: Copyright Management for Online Courses?” will be presented on November 6, 2013 by Kevin L. Smith, Director, Copyright and Scholarly Communication at Duke University Libraries. Libraries have become more proactive about educating users with regard to their rights and responsibilities vis à vis copyright and Kevin will offer insights into the library’s role in settings beyond the traditional classroom model.

Who should attend? Librarians, library administrators, and library educators interested in supporting and enhancing libraries’ preparation of and participation in MOOCs.

Presenter: Kevin L. Smith is Duke University’s first Director of the Copyright and Scholarly Communications Office. His principal role is to teach and advise faculty, administrators, and students about copyright, intellectual property licensing, and scholarly publishing. He is the Chair of the ACRL Research and Scholarly Environment Committee for 2012 - 2013 and a member of the steering committee for SPARC, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition. He maintains a highly-regarded web log on scholarly communications (http://library.duke.edu/blogs/scholcomm/) that discusses copyright and publication in academia.

On October, 23rd American Library (NaUKMA) hosted a seminar on "Open access to scientific information in Ukraine and the world: why NaUKMA should join". Librarians and professors of NaUKMA discussed resources of open access in electronic collection of NaUKMA Library.

Book Choice - Discovering America

The second Monday in October is designated in the United States as Columbus Day. This day commemorates Christopher Columbus' first voyage and sighting of the Americas on October 12, 1492. We picked books on geography and history of discovering America.


CHILDREN'S LIBRARY CLUB MEETING

On Monday, October 14, American Library held a Children’s club meeting. This day was dedicated to the new adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends. Evgeniya Pirog, children’s author prepared a story for our young readers, which will continue during the next meeting.

News Know - How: Workshop at the American Library

On October, 7th American Library (NaUKMA) hosted a seminar on "News know-how: librarians, students, and journalists work together to monitor and evaluate news."

Seminar was moderated by Barbara Jones, Director of Office for Intellectual Freedom at the American Library Association, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Barbara Jones is also an Executive Director of the Freedom to Read Foundation. She received a Ph.D. in U.S. history at the University of Minnesota and a Master of Library Service at Columbia University in New York. Moreover, Barbara devoted 40 years of her library career to investigating the topic of intellectual freedom in libraries. Today Barbara is an author of 2 books, dedicated to intellectual freedom in libraries: “Libraries, Access, and Intellectual Freedom: Developing Policies for Public and Academic Libraries” (1999) and “Protecting Intellectual Freedom in Your Academic Library: Scenes from the Front Lines” (2009).

Dear Library users, in October we are having temporary working hours change.
On Saturday, October, 5 - the Library is closed.
On Monday, October, 7 - the Library is open.
On Monday, October, 28 - the Library is open.
On Thursday, October, 31 - the Library is closed due to clean up day.
Besides these days our schedule is the same:
Tuesday - Thursday: 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Friday: 12 a.m. - 9 p.m.
Saturday: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

BOOK CHOICE - WORLD VEGETARIAN DAY

World Vegetarian Day is observed annually on October 1. It is a day of celebration established by the North American Vegetarian Society in 1977 and endorsed by the International Vegetarian Union in 1978, "To promote the joy, compassion and life-enhancing possibilities of vegetarianism." It brings awareness to the ethical, environmental, health and humanitarian benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle. On this day we decided to pick books on healthy and green lifestile. Enjoy )
